TypeTrainer4Mac is a multilingual typing tutor for Mac OS X. You have to type a string of random characters. You can select a character set and in this way you can control the learning process. You can also drag-and-drop a text file of your choice or one prepared by yourself as a rich text file. Each session provides its own protocol. You can find it on your desktop in the file TypeTrainer4Mac_Run_Log.rtf.

(c)softpedia.com review:

Most typing tutor applications are cute and full of eye candy to appeal to young children. They also have elaborate game-like systems to fool them into thinking they are playing when they are actually learning to type. While all that is great when trying to get your children to learn how to blind type, it is not exactly the kind of thing you would appreciate. While arguably, people either learn to type before a certain age or never bother trying afterwards, preferring to play the letter version of whack a mole with their index finger, there are exceptions out there. If you want a clean, simple typing tutor that simply helps you practice blind typing without any of the bells and whistles, there are not a lot of choices out there.

Fortunately, while there are not a lot of such programs out there, there are some, such as TypeTrainer4Mac.

What it does

TypeTrainer4Mac is a typing tutor, which, like all typing tutors helps you learn how to blind type. It presents you with random strings of characters that you need to type out and keeps track of your mistakes and typing speed.

From a functional point of view there is a little key difference between this program and others like it… However, from a design point of view, TypeTrainer4Mac is an exception in that it does contain any bloat features or pointless eye candy.

Learn blind typing

When I first fired up this program I was a bit disturbed by the random characters string it presented me with. Most other similar programs have built in text that they use as bases for lessons. However, the more I thought about it, the more the TypeTrainer4Mac approach made sense…

The entire purpose of blind typing is to learn how to type blindly while looking at something else, such as the monitor or books. It is a very robotic thing, and as such, it works on a different principle than handwriting, where you do have to look at what you are writing. This is why using text that makes sense, and can be remembered to any degree is a bad thing. It’s too close to normal writing, and the tendency is to remember the next bit you have to write and look at the keyboard while you are typing it.

The random text approach is good because the string does not make sense and you get used to simply typing whatever is there, and since you can’t memorize it, there is no incentive to look at the keyboard because it will not make things go any faster. Another big part is how the program does not actually show you any letters on the reference keyboard that is on screen, just the number of the finger you need to use to type that letter.

Of course, the program also lets you use nay text file as a basis for the lesson so you can practice on actual text once you get the hand of things.

Make up your own rules

While TypeTrainer4Mac keeps track of the mistakes you make and insists on those characters in the next string of letters, it also lets you take a freestyle approach to learning how to blind type.

At any point, you can customize the keys you want to focus on. Pressing the select button will present you with a keyboard layout where you can select the characters you wish to be working on. This is a simple matter of clicking or unclicking the desired keys but can be practical in case you want to do something different than the lessons the developer envisioned would be good for you.

Keyboard layout savvy

Regardless of your keyboard language and layout, TypeTrainer4Mac will work for you. It has been tested with almost all of the keyboard layouts supported by Tiger and will work perfectly. All you have to do to work on a certain keyboard layout is to select it from the input menu once in the program.

It will automatically relaunch itself with the appropriate setting and update both the selection window as well as the generated text strings themselves.

The Good

Clean interface design and approach. Lacks all the bloat and focuses on the job exclusively.

The Bad

If you are used to other programs you will miss the feedback part of the learning process. While TypeTrainer4Mac does keep track of the mistakes u make and gives the same characters back to you for practice, it does thins in a invisible, behind the scenes way. As such, there is never any real feedback and progress has to be measured by you.

The Truth

A good tool for learning how to blind type, with a very different approach of the whole process. Like all things different, it is up to you to decide whether that is good or bad.

Gabe’s TypOmeter

Home page:

OS:

Windows 95/98/XP

Size:

Download

The TypOmeter displays a lot of live information: The speed you are currently typing with; measured both as keypresses pr minute - KPM, and as Words pr minute - WPM. It counts the number of keystrokes, words and mouse clicks pr day, and the total number of keystrokes and mouseclikcs you have performed ever. Finally you get some rough statistics about what kind of keys you have typed

You can now select from a variety of different skins for your TypOmeter. If you find the default skins boring, you can easily create your own!

The Type Recorder is a window in the timespace showing the speed you have been typing with the last five minues. From version 2.0, it shows typing speed measured as Keypress pr Minute, and as Word pr Minute. It even shows the average speed you have been typing with for each of the last five minute

The Key Statistics will show you a lot of useful(?) information about how you utilize each character on your keyboard.

You will get to know which key you are Pressing most often, which one you are Deleting most frequently, which keys you are having Problems with, and even the Speed of each Key. You will see that some keys are much faster than others. Maybe you should join a Touch Method course to improve the speed of all your keys, and the slow ones in particular?

The TypOmeter measures which applications you have used, when you used them, how long you used them, and how many mouse clicks and key presses you have given each application.

In the “Applications…” you get 14 different graphs showing details about the applications you have been using. One of them is a detailed Gantt Diagram showing exactly when you used each application, and it also shows when you have been away from your computer. For each application you have ever used, you will get 7 dedicated statistics for that particular application.

Increased Efficiency

It is more efficient because the typist uses all fingers instead of just a few fingers. As a result, typing speed will increase dramatically. Increased Effectiveness

It is more effective because the typist looks at the output on the screen, not the keyboard.

Less Mental Fatigue

It is less demanding on the brain because the brain does not need to cope with two issues, that of locating the keys and focusing on the output

Less Physical Fatigue

It is also less tiring because it distributes the total load over all fingers. Touch typing, because of its natural and flowing finger movements, results in less stress.

Less Wear and Tear

It reduces wear and tear on the few fingers that are constantly being used. The load is spread over many more fingers and thus the risk of Cumulative Trauma Disorder is reduced.

Features

Easy to use and effective typing programme

Features of the last release

The key features are:

Internationalization: Czech, Dutch, English, Esperanto, French, German (incomplete), Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. If you want to translate to another language, please read the instructions for translation.

Ready to use keyboard layouts:

“qwerty” (BR; BR_abnt2; CZ; EL; ES; HE; IT; PT; SE; TR; UK; US)

Dvorak (BR; FR; TR; US; US_BR; US_ES; US_SE) “qwertz” (CZ; DE; HU) “azerty” (FR; FR_ibook; BE) “jtsuken” (RU) AlphaGrip5 (US) Keyboard layout editor: makes possible to configure the keys’ positions and to save the result in a simple text file. If your keyboard isn’t shown above, you can create it. If you need to do it, please let us know about.

Basic course: a basic type of course is available for memorizing the keys positions on the keyboard. It is supposed to be independent from keyboard layout, by the generation of random character sequences to be followed by the student.

Adaptability exercises: these exercises use all the keys ramdonly, so that you can practice using all the keyboard. It’s named adaptability exercise because it develops the capacity to adapt your typing skills to any kind of strange words that may appear in some texts.

Velocity exercises: one achieves velocity on typing when the environment is well known, or, when the words come from one’s own language. That’s why these exercises focus on velocity. And even if your language isn’t supported by the application, you still can indicate texts in any language to include the words contained there.

Fluidness exercises: with these exercises, one works typing complete paragraphs, with good sense sentences. Typing errors aren’t accepted: the user must correct them with the backspace key before be allowed to go on. Especial attention is given to the typing rhythm, which must be as uniform as possible. Just like the velocity exercises, this one here makes possible to load any text files, independently of language.

Progress charts: at the accomplishment of each exercise, some characteristics of your performance are saved and can be graphically showed. Thus, you can easily observe your learning progress (or regress).

Including other texts: facilities to import extern text and use then with the advanced modules (velocity / fluidness). You can launch an usual dialog to select a local file of the system; you can paste text already copied to the clipboard; and more, you can select, drag and drop text at the entry box in the bottom of the tutor window. This two last facilities work, for example, with text selected in your browser, from any prefered page of yours.

Semi-online contest: for the last training module (fluidness), there is a scoring scheme to rank users accordingly to their touch typing skills. The ranking is done only locally, for users in a shared machine, or it may be enabled to send the local data to a web server, where they will be proccessed and a global ranking will be publicly available. This last case can be applied only in Linux based systems (see Requisites). Then the program would be running as a “semi-online” game.

Clean graphical interface: when learning to type correctly, one must not get the attention off the exercises. So, it isn’t recommended neither to have dozens of gauges measuring velocity, errors, time, etc; nor a virtual keyboard floating in front of the student: he/she must memorize the key positions by the tact, not visually. Hence, Klavaro’s interface started simple and will remain like that for all of its lifetime.

KTouch is a program for learning how to touch-type.

KTouch is FREE and offers you an easy way to learn to type quickly and correctly on a keyboard. Every finger has its place on the keyboard with associated keys to press. Starting with only a few keys to remember you will advance through different training levels while additional keys are introduced. As a result you will be able to type quickly and accurately. This is because you no longer need to search for the keys on the keyboard and because you will definitely be using more than just two fingers.

KTouch indicates the keys you need to press and the finger you need to use for that key on the screen. You don’t have to look down on the keyboard to search for the key. You will therefore get used to looking at the screen only and hence learn touch typing much faster.

Features Here’s a list of the main features of KTouch:

KTouch supports various keyboard layouts and you can easily add own keyboard layouts

A number of training lectures are included by default (english, german, french … etc) You can add and modify training lectures using the built-in lecture editor Detailed training statistics help you to find possible typing problems (keys that you typed wrong very often) The program calculates typing speed and your accuracy on-the-fly and displays them while you type Many settings (including the colour scheme of the program) can be modified by the user During training the level can be adjusted automatically according to your typing skill: if you type fast and correctly you will move a level up, otherwise stay in the level or even move down. So you will learn touch typing like playing a game.

You can also view your personal test result history and print out test diplomas. Program has multiuser support and four games. Test Your Typing Skills

TypingMaster Typing Test is a free, full-featured typing tester for Windows.

After warming up with the fun typing games you can evaluate your typing skills with any of the several test texts - or add your own text. You can also view test result history and print out typing certificates.

Features

Custom text support

Multi-user support Warm-up games Personal result history Printable typing certificates

If you’re looking to boost your typing speed and accuracy, TypingMaster Typing Test can provide the repetitive practice you need. Just don’t expect this freeware program to give you any coaching. In a typical session, you might start with the rudimentary (and rather dull) warm-up games and move on from there to the full-blown typing tests. TypingMaster offers only one kind of testing method–retyping a set text–though you can break up the monotony by supplying your own TXT files. The program can store results for several users and track their progress over several tests. At the end of each test, the program gives a brief performance evaluation, though we wish it also gave custom-tailored advice based on our typing patterns. Unfortunately, that feature is restricted to the for-pay version. In sum, TypingMaster Typing Test offers nothing to distinguish it from countless similar titles, and earns only a lukewarm recommendation from us.

This program is designed for young typists (grades Pre-K to 3rd), and teaches proper typing technique for the letter keys. Sound effects and animation are used to make learning to type fun (and funny). Help is given with an animated typing tutorial, a screen to show proper fingering, and an on-screen keyboard which highlights the correct key when needed.

Because of the program’s design - no arcade distractions (unless selected) and only one element presented at a time - it is a good choice for beginning typists or children with dysgraphia or other special learning needs.

There are three lessons in the program to provide typing practice. “Jumping Letters” is designed for very young students, and can be played at any pace. Each correctly typed letter is rewarded with the letter being removed by an animated “critter” chosen by the pupil. When 10 letters are completed (context-sensitive help insures success), the child gets a silly cartoon.

“Letter Drill” allows students to choose between 20 and 120 letters to practice. A report is generated at the end of the practice showing words per minute, errors, and time. The last letter in the sequence is removed in a silly way by a “critter”, then the pupil is rewarded with a cartoon.

“Flying Letters” is an arcade style typing game for advanced students. The speed of the game is determined by the player (and can be changed at any time during the game). A report is generated at the end of the game, and a funny animation is displayed.

All three games allow the student to choose a group of letters (such as left hand home keys), or to practice all 26 letters. The animation in the program is achieved using stop-motion animation, as well as other techniques.

Typing Game Section

Type the characters appearing on the aliens falling from the sky, before they reach the bottom. As soon as you type a character that appears on an alien it is deleted from the alien. The rest of the characters on the alien turn red, letting you know it is selected. Type all the characters off an alien, and it will be obliterated from the screen. Little breaks here and there throughout the exercises display your accuracy and words per minute. Make it through the whole exercise, and receive a gratifying applause. Complete a home key exercises in the game, and the next exercise is automatically loaded. Just keep going until you have done all the home key exercises, or stop by hitting the Esc button. There are 9 Key Learning exercises. They automatically load in order as you type them. There is All Kinds of Animals, Presidents of the United States, Number Pad, and a Random Never Ending exercise, for you to type too.

Choose from three speeds to play the game: Beginner, Fast, or Expert. Just click the speed you want before choosing the exercise. You can also choose from three backdrops while playing the typing game. Click your choice before you choose the exercise.

Use the Random Never Ending Exercise. Random words and characters appear on the aliens for you to type. They cover the whole alphanumerical keyboard plus punctuation symbols. You never run out of typing material. You’ll have to hit the Esc button to stop.

Text From Screen Section

Test your typing speed, accuracy, and learn to touch type. With large easy to read 24 pixel text, Homemade Typing gives you instant feedback on your typing speed, accuracy, correct characters typed, incorrect characters typed, and time spent typing. If you type an incorrect character, you’ll hear the wrong key buzzer. The wrong key buzzer teaches you to type accurately by instantly letting you know when you’ve hit a wrong key.

Lessons

In the Text From Screen section there are 6 home key exercises, that cover all the alphabetical, number and punctuation keys. I have the lessons arranged so you learn the home keys first, by typing each key 25 times or more. A new key is added to the exercise after a set of keys has been typed the 25 times. Previously typed keys are arranged into different words, sequences, and mixed with new keys, reinforcing keys that have already been learned. Just do the exercises in order. To break up the key learning lessons, and type something more interesting, choose a story, do the number pad exercise, or go to the game section. Make it through all the home key exercises, and see your final scores and hear the gratifying applause.

Keyboard Master will teach you touch-typing quickly in a completely new way.

Instead of doing boring and monotonous drills, you will learn or improve touch-typing quickly while playing attractive typing games with the same or even better result.

Ideal for both adults and children!

In a few weeks time, even if you do nothing more than play our games regularly, you will be able to type quickly without errors, and without looking at the keyboard. And this skill of touch-typing will be yours forever!

Depending on your preferences, you can learn by following one of the ready-made course scenarios included in the program, or choose exercises and games individually.

We advise to start with a short (3-5 minute) introductory exercise for each letter and then move to games to build your skills, but you can omit them altogether moving directly to games.

The courses are longer or shorter, both for beginners or advanced users. You can choose whether material is introduced more quickly or more slowly. You can also choose whether you want to learn the whole keyboard or only the part you use most often.

You can also take an exam and print a virtual certificate when completing the course.

LINK DISABLED DURING REDESIGN

LaserTyping is a revolutionary typing tutor which teaches you how to touch type in a fun new way using a color-coded keyboard and an interactive typing game - in full stereo sound!

It uses a unique, patented method of progressive instantaneous instruction to teach you how to type. It’s ideal for the classroom, self-teaching or home schooling.

English keyboard, English language, 196 lessons - standard English and selections from the King James Bible, color-coded, STEREO! Yes..cues for letters are not only visual but audial. If the letter is to be typed by the left hand and you can’t remember, the sound reminding you where it is comes from the left speaker - in addition to the screen reminders.

If you are a hunt-and-peck typist the fastest you’ll ever be able to type will probably be about 34 words-per-minute. If you look at the screen while you type, which causes you to visually error check, the limit is about 65 words-per-minute. However, once you have finished this program, if you continue to practice looking at the page to be copied without checking for and correcting errors you’ll be able to type as fast as you’re ‘internally wired.’

Some thoughts on breaking the hunt and peck habit using LaserTyping:

• Position the keyboard at an angle of thirty degrees to the computer - either to the left or the right, it doesn’t make any difference. That makes it harder to “cheat” when learning. Looking down at the keys lets your eyes lead your fingers to the keys and it is very difficult to type much faster than thirty words-per-minute doing that. However, if you don’t look at the keys the sky’s the limit.

• Unlike many other programs, LaserTyping does not “penalize” you for mistakes. It never says how many mistakes you’ve made, it only tells you how well you’ve done. When you mistype a letter, the program momentarily interrupts the practice flow to teach you the unknown letter then resumes. LaserTyping transitions seamlessly between typing teacher to typing practice. • LaserTyping lets you switch between lessons and difficulty at any time; it’s your choice. We recommend, however, that you only move on to the next lesson when your speed has reached at about twenty words-per-minute. • LaserTyping lets you succeed in learning how to type. One elementary school in Colorado had 85% of third graders typing 30 words-per-minute in 15 hours of practice

Experts learn how to become masters of touch typing with our course. Home computer users also benefit from learning the touch type method. No more hunt and peck, two finger typing. Within days you can memorize the qwerty keyboard and go on to developing speed. Letter Chase is a master at teaching speed typing. Two unique lessons will have you up to speed faster than any of the other typing courses, and with greater accuracy. We call them “Word Sweep” and “Letter Chase.”

Letter Chase Typing Tutor Features

All immediate family members can use Letter Chase typing tutor and print and save to file charts of their progress. Charts will automatically be saved with the present user name and the date included in the chart title. 11 Lessons will take you step by step to learn to type. Animated hands will guide you so you will not have to look at your keyboard. Making Letter Chase suitable for schools with young students. In the Beginners drills, transparent, animated hands will also guide you from home row to the letter to type. This will help you pick up on the direction and distance of the keys from the home row position. An Intermediate Section is included. With it you can practice words with commonly used letter combinations (ing, qu, ion, etc.). You can instantly pick the combination you want by clicking a speed button. The file will automatically go to the place you choose. Also, you can practice phrases or simple sentences. The animated hands are still used in the intermediate section. The Advanced Section allows you to practice with four lines. Your practice will be more realistic and a more accurate WPM score can be calculated, as will the speed tests. The Letter Chase section is unique to computer typing tutorials. The letters appear at an adjustable WPM rate of speed. The challenge is to set it slightly faster than you can normally type and then try to catch up. The speed adjuster can adjust to any WPM rate you want regardless of the speed of your computer. Another unique feature called “Word Sweep” places words on the screen for a limited amount of time (this is adjustable). The purpose is to teach you how to type the most commonly used words in the English language as quickly as possible. Speed tests are provided so you can monitor your touch typing progress.

Typing Well Isn’t Magic And Anyone Can Learn!

Step By Step Instruction

Super Typing Wizard introduces the keyboard starting with what is known as the home row - the keys your fingers rest on in the middle of the keyboard. Each key is introduced in a way that makes it easier for you to remember and practice the correct motion. With each exercise, you will get a picture of how your hands should be placed. It’s okay if all this is new to you because our wizards will walk you through it.

The first several exercises teach you which fingers are for striking which keys and helps to build your accuracy and speed gradually. You are encouraged to repeat exercises to get comfortable with the keyboard before moving on to actual sentences. Instructional tips are provided to help with your posture and keyboarding skill.

Reports To Track Your Progress

You can always view your progress through the handy reports the program provides. As you improve you can save your scores to track how many errors you’re making and how many words per minute you are typing. The reports can also be printed for classroom situations or if you want to keep notes as you go.

Serious Typing Mixed With A Little Fun

The initial exercises are designed to provide the instruction and practice you need to learn the keyboard and develop your typing skills. Later exercises focus on topics to make things more interesting as you increase your speed and accuracy. We encourage you to then create your own exercises. You can use passages from a book or the lyrics of a song just for fun. Or you can use words and phrases from a particular industry like the medical industry, computers/software or legal

Our Top Five Typing Tips

Practice, Practice, Practice

We all know that practice is one of the keys to learning any new skill and typing is no different. We recommend you practice your typing for a certain amount of time for a certain number of days each week to get the best results. It is better to practice for 15 minutes 3 days a week than it is to practice for 2 hours one day and not touch the keyboard again for 2 weeks.

F is for Focus

There are many things to focus on when typing. When you begin, focus on striking each key with the correct finger (even if it doesn’t feel right at first). Also focus on the copy (what you are typing) rather than on the keyboard or the computer screen. Try saying each letter prior to typing it to help you focus.

Sit Up Straight

As we mentioned, there are a lot of things to focus on. You don’t want bad posture distracting you. Sit up straight with your feet on the floor. Be comfortable yet firm. Your forearms should be parallel to the floor. After you’re typing like a wiz, you can put your feet up and put the keyboard in your lap.

Rhythm and Melody

Okay we’re not sure about melody but you might enjoy a little music while you type. In any case, try to develop a rhythmwith your typing. Your keys should be flowing consistently rather than in starts and stops (or spurts).

Take a Break

Learning is supposed to be fun. If you get tired, that’s okay. Take a short break. You don’t have to practice for hours - short sessions on a regular basis are just as good. Don’t fall into the typing trap of getting tired then making mistakes and getting frustrated.

Did You Know?

The most amazing fact is that with all of the billions of people using a standard keyboard only a very small percentage of them can touch type! Think are you one of them? It is no secret that we are living in a computer-dependent world. And now typing skills have become more important than ever before. It’s no longer enough to be an average typist; the businessman or woman needs to be able to take dictation, type flawlessly, and do it all at high speed!

Do You Want To Improve Your Typing Skills?

If you answer yes… please read on.

Touch Typing Technology is an effective way to improve your typing skills. It is using all ten fingers to type without looking at the keyboard. It means that you can type and read at the same time. If you are copying a document, filling a form or just writing something, you can do it faster and more efficiently.

“Can You Show Me Some Advantages of Touch Typing?”

The advantages of touch typing are numerous which includes:

You will no longer have to use the “hunt-and-peck” style of typing – you’ll just know automatically where the keys are located.

Increased typing speed which lets you complete your tasks more quickly.

Increased typing accuracy which cuts down on proof reading time

Muscle and tendon injury decrease because using your entire fingers load balances the work.

Eyestrain is reduced because you do not need to constantly refocus your eyes by constantly shifting your gaze from the keyboard to the screen of the document you are copying.

You’ll also be much more confident in your abilities as you practice.

It can help you get the skills you need to create your own part time job.

TypingBlaster is the drill sergeant of typing tutors. Few tutors so closely simulate the standard drills of a live typing class. The product has study material for a wide range of skill levels, from the basic to very advanced. Text-typing exercises are arranged in 20 lessons. Learning is backed up by educational games and the intelligent Revision wizard. Section length can run from 1 to 30 minutes and a log file of important “grade” statistics such as CPM (characters per minute) and accuracy is generated. You may even challenge yourself further by setting a target speed rate anywhere from a ho-hum 70cpm to an astounding 200cpm. The trial version contains only the first six lessons.

This is a most recent typing tutor that comes with a new typing technique inspired by the classical guitar playing method. It is new and different from what other typing tutorials have to show. It’s only available for the QWERTY type of keyboards for now.

This is what makes this typing tutor unique:

it teaches you how to use all your fingers (including your THUMBS!) without looking at the keyboard it shows you exactly how to place (prepare) your fingers before typing parts of words it allows you to edit your own lessons it allows you to edit the way parts of words (combinations) may be typed

However, there are MANY combinations where you must use your THUMBS in order to get the best typing speed.

Other features:

contains a full set of over 100 carefully made lessons

it remembers the mistakes you make and lets you practice in order to learn how to type correctly it allows you to measure your typing speed by choosing a text file and typing its content it allows an unlimited number of persons use a licensed copy on a single computer This program is addressed to those that truly want to improve their typing speed and accuracy, that want to learn the best technique out there.

TopTenREVIEWS - Bronze Award - Awarded for excellence in design, useability and feature set

Our third pick and the “TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award Winner” is 21st Century Typing from 21st Software Corp. Although this typing program lacks many of the features offered by our #1 and #2 picks, 21st Century Typing is a high–quality typing program that’s simple, easy to use and effective.

21st Century Typing 21st Century Typing Screenshot2
Ease of Use:

21st Century Typing is extremely user–friendly; just follow the instructions presented in both brief tutorials and you’ll be on your way to mastering the program.

Feature Set:

With 40 separate skill–building lessons, 21st Century Typing gives you the tools you need to improve both your typing speed and accuracy. The program offers a pretest that determines which program level best matches your typing skills.

Some lessons allow you to focus on a specific hand, individual fingers, 10–key or even the characters and symbols on the keyboard. There are two games available that add fun and variety to your typing practice, but these games aren’t adjustable to match your skill level.

You can test your speed skills with 21st Century Typing a few different ways—you can focus on either words per minute, accuracy or adjusted words per minute. The program presents your speed and accuracy results on the screen, which you can print if you wish.

21st Century Typing also provides several customizable options, including statistical presentations, sounds effects, test/lesson lengths and passing requirements. This typing program also includes a large typing practice library, but you cannot add your own selections, as you can in higher–ranked typing software.
Ease of Installation:

We had no problems installing 21st Century Typing.

Help/Support:

21st Century Typing offers adequate support, mostly in its two brief tutorials-one explains how to use the lessons and the other teaches you how to play the games. The typing program also includes a built-in index search that offers information on specific subjects.

You can also receive help directly from 21st Software Corp. through FAQs on their homepage or by email. We were disappointed 21st Software Corp. didn’t offer a telephone support number.
Summary:

21st Century Typing from 21st Software Corp. is a solid product that’s easy to use and has plenty to offer. If you’re looking for a basic typing program that will get the job done without all the bells and whistles, then this product is for you.

TypingMaster Reviewer’s Comments

TypingMaster Pro by TypingMaster is reasonable typing software with a good set of features. It is priced about the same as the Gold and Silver typing programs.

Ease of Use:

TypingMaster Pro is fairly easy to figure out, but there is no screen by screen information or instruction. There also isn’t any help built into the program or a help section available online.

We found it pretty frustrating to use this program, for example, we know that you can practice 10-key with it, but we simply could not find it or anything that could tell us where to look.
Feature Set:

TypingMaster offers a “Pro Trainer” tool that analyzes your typing while you use certain Windows applications and then creates a customized lesson based on your weaknesses. You can also customize your drills and tests to work on a specific typing weakness easily.

TypingMaster Pro allows you to select between nine different languages to use and between 34 different types of keyboards. There are also some basic games for typing fun available with the program. TypingMaster Pro contains an easy-to-read reports page, which can be printed out in the form of a certificate of achievement.

We did have a problem with the program’s testing system. Basically when you’re taking a test, the word you are supposed to type is underlined for you. But when you move to the next word, it takes an extra moment for the underline to move also. This problem becomes more irritating the faster you type.
Ease of Installation:

We experienced no problems while installing TypingMaster Pro.

Help/Support:

TypingMaster Pro offers built-in help that is accessible from the “Information” screen and there is FAQs available online where you will find the answers to common questions. There is also an online form you can use to email questions directly to customer support.

Summary:

TypeMaster from TypeMaster Pro is a basic, no-frills program that offers a great deal of lesson and test customization.

Typing Tutor For Dummies Reviewer’s Comments

Typing Tutor for Dummies by Atari is a pretty easy to use typing software program that comes with a few good features. Unfortunately, the product’s lack of support and testing capabilities made it impossible for us to give it any higher ranking.

Ease of Use:

Typing Tutor for Dummies is fairly easy to use, which is a good thing as there’s very little help available. To use this product, you just click on the appropriate tab to move from section to section and then follow the brief instructions provided when you get there.

Feature Set:

Typing Tutor for Dummies offers several tabs to choose from, including Learning to use Ergonomics. From these tabs, you can access your typing stats, lessons, practice material, user options and ergonomic instructions. Audio dictation is available with this program.

Typing Tutor for Dummies contains many practice sessions, as well as lessons. You can turn on or off sound, clock and other options for this program through the Settings Tab. And although this product doesn’t offer testing capabilities, you can time your practice sessions.
Ease of Installation:

We experienced no problems while installing Typing Tutor for Dummies.

Help/Support:

Atari offers help for Typing Tutor for Dummies in the form of brief, onscreen tips and a searchable index. We were unable to find any online support for this product.

Summary:

Typing Tutor for Dummies is a decent program for the price, but its lack of technical support from Atari and its nonexistent testing capabilities make it comparatively a poor pick

Touch Tutor Typing Deluxe by Compucall Ltd. is extremely basic typing software that’s easy to use and offers decent help and support. But, for the price tag, this product just doesn’t give you your money’s worth.

Ease of Use:

Touch Tutor Typing Deluxe is extremely easy to use, as there’s not much to it. The navigation on this product is icon-based, with popup descriptions—which we felt was a nice touch.

Feature Set:

Touch Tutor Typing Deluxe can be used as a standalone product in a home or for a group in a classroom setting.

The program comes with 19 separate lessons, which teach you how to type using the basic letters, and tests that go along with each lesson (the tests looks exactly like each lessons). There are also a few user options you can change within the program.

Typing Pal Reviewer’s Comments

Typing Pal 3.0 by Enteractive Inc. is essentially the same program as Typing Tutor for Dummies.

Typing Pal’s navigation tabs are slightly different and Typing Pal costs more than its sister product—these are the reasons this product received a lower ranking.

Instant Typing Reviewer’s Comments

Instant Typing is an older program that is no longer supported by its manufacturer, Topics Entertainment.

Instant Typing comes with a strong feature set and customizable options that allow you to create lessons and tests that are geared toward your weaknesses. But with no support, purchasing Instant Typing is a gamble—if you have problems, you’re on your own.

Instant Immersion Typing Reviewer’s Comments

Instant Immersion Typing’s box somewhat resembles the Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing box but that’s where the similarity ends. Instant Immersion Typing is an animated, intergalactic arcade-style space game.

This is a multilingual training suite where you can set the speed, difficulty level and the practice exercises allowing you to develop your skills using English, French, Spanish or Italian.

The feature Set of Instant Immersion Typing is very limited – there is no support available from the manufacturer – if you purchase this product you are on your own.
